Happiness is being off thyroid meds for a year after drs SWORE I'd be on them forever
After reading about side effects of the meds, which include:
fever,
hot flashes,
sweating,
headache,
irritability,
nausea,
Insomnia,
changes in appetite, weight & menstrual cycles,
with no relief whatsoever, I decided to take my health into my own hands & find a holistic way. I experienced most of those "common side effects" & it did NOT make sense to take a pill that CAUSED that! Those were worse than the symptoms of hypothyroid/hashimotos before getting on meds 20 yrs ago
So, w/ an approach solely based on nutrition & fitness, I changed my diet, added a few things I read up on, changed macros & w/in a few months, I was feeling great! At the same time, I also stopped taking all thyroid meds prescribed to me
Needless to say, I was nervous when I was due for my first blood test to check levels after that but I couldn't wait to see results .
Well, I can't say I was surprised when, for the first time EVER, all 3 (TSH, T3 & T4) were NORMAL RANGE! My dr couldn't believe it & neither could I because for over 20 yrs, I dealt w/ constant changes in prescriptions that never solved the problems
My hashimotos lead to irregular periods, infertility, anxiety, depression, puffy face, hair loss, weight gain, memory lapses, constipation, dry skin & so much more. I was tired of getting NO relief from those symptoms &, to top it off, more negative side effects from meds
This is now my 3rd blood test checking thyroid levels that came back NORMAL RANGE across the board! At almost 43, I now have more energy, regular monthly menstrual cycles, a healthy digestive system, improved skin, tons of energy, controlled weight & look/feel 10x better than I did in my 20s & 30s
So, if you're battling the same, don't give up. If you need help, reach out. I would never tell ANYONE to get off meds prescribed by their doctor, that was my own choice, but changes you make can have a positive impact on you that you may feel better even while on your meds. Then you & your dr can determine your best path
So, email (ellieperico@aol.com), send me a message on FB (Ellie Perico) or text me (818-632-6969) and let me help YOU get off those meds and feel better too!
I'm a full time mom with a few part time jobs and a passion for anything and everything fun, fitness & family!

6 Filling Foods That Boost Weightloss
You know the feeling: You’re committed to losing weight and eating healthier, but you’re just so hungry all the time! Argh! Why can’t you lose weight without feeling like a crazy person, constantly ‘hangry’ and perpetually fantasizing about “forbidden” foods? Answer: You can. One of the keys to successful weight loss is to fuel your body with foods that not only support your slim-down efforts, but also help you feel satisfied, thus preventing the kind of wanton binging that can sabotage your goals. Here are six that can do exactly that.
Protein: A recent study at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center at Louisiana State University found that eating protein increases satiety in the short term, helping you lose weight in the long term. Since it takes your body longer to break down protein and convert it into energy than it does, say, simple carbs, eating protein can help you feel fuller longer, making you less likely to snack on junk later on. Your goal: Have high-quality protein at every meal — egg whites with breakfast, Shakeology as a snack, and 4 to 6 ounces of your favorite animal or plant protein for lunch and dinner, for example.
Hemp Seeds: In general, seeds are excellent sources of nutrition, containing plenty of fiber, healthy fats, and amino acids. But hemp seeds are one of the few plant-based food sources that contain all nine essential amino acids, making them a complete protein. They’re also rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Like fiber and protein, fatty acids can help increase feelings of fullness, making it easier to lose weight and keep it off, according to a study in the journal Appetite. Sprinkle 1 to 2 tablespoons on a salad, or toss them into your morning smoothie to give it a little more staying power.
Grapefruit: Eating half a grapefruit or drinking 8 ounces of fresh grapefruit juice three times a day can boost weight-loss efforts significantly, according to researchers at the Scripps Clinic, in California. In their 12-week study, participants lost an average 4 pounds. A separate study at The Rowett Institute of Nutrition and Health in England suggests a possible explanation: Grapefruit is a potent source of pectin, a soluble fiber that can help slow digestion and suppress appetite, leaving you feeling fuller longer, and reducing fat storage in the body. But you’ll only find pectin in the pulp, so drink it pulpy. Better still, eat the whole darn fruit!
Eggs: Considered a “perfect” protein by many, eggs contain all essential and non-essential amino acids. And they’re perfect for weight loss. A study from the Biomedical Research Center in Louisiana found that eating eggs at breakfast helped people feel less hungry while also stabilizing their blood sugar levels and helping them eat fewer calories throughout the day. Need some recipe ideas?
Nuts: Since many nuts are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to provide several health benefits related to metabolism, immune function, and inflammation, these nutrition powerhouses are ideal when trying to lose weight, eat healthy, and curb hunger. Plus, they’re loaded with protein and fiber, making them a great go-to snack. Just be sure to eat them in moderation. Nuts are calorically dense, so a little goes a long way. Indeed, a handful is all it takes to reap all of the nutrition and weight loss benefits.
Broth-based Soup: The high water content will fill you up for a minimal caloric cost, according to a report by the CDC. That’s a win-win for weight loss. And if you make your own, you’ll be able to control both the ingredients and the sodium content — absolute musts for healthy eating.

Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar

HOME
1. Non-Toxic Cleaner:
It’s no secret that vinegar is an excellent household cleaner. What some people don’t know is that raw, unfiltered vinegar contains all the bacteria fighting benefits that some commercial vinegars lack. To make your own cleaning solution, simply mix equal parts water and apple cider vinegar, plus a little elbow grease, to get your home free of dirt, bacteria, and toxins cleaners. Don’t worry, the vinegar smell goes away as it dries.
2. Weed Killer:
A friendly neighbor turned me on to vinegar as weed killing alternative years ago and it’s even more effective than dangerous glyphosate. Just mix 1/2 gallon apple cider vinegar, 1/4 cup salt, and 1/2 teaspoon dish soap. It will effectively kill any plant you spray it on, so make sure you avoid the flowers and other plants you want to keep.
3. Odor Neutralizer:
Is your home filled with an unpleasant odor that just won’t go away? Place some apple cider vinegar in a dish and leave near the offensive odor to help get rid of it quicker.
HEALTH
4. Diabetes Prevention:
Multiple studies have shown a correlation between apple cider vinegar and lower blood sugar levels. In one study participants took two tablespoons of ACV before bed and saw their blood sugar 4 to 6 percent by the time they woke. The antiglycemic effect of the acid in apple cider vinegar is what helps with insulin sensitivity.
5. Weight Loss:
Consuming apple cider vinegar can help you feel more full, which can help you eat less. A study has also shown acetic acid, found in ACV, to slow fat accumulation. If the flavor is too strong for you to sip on it’s own, try adding apple cider vinegar to juices, salad dressing, and even water to incorporate it into your diet.
6. Lower Cholesterol:
In addition to lowered blood sugar and weight loss, a study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry showed interesting findings regarding apple cider vinegar and cholesterol. Lowered VLDL levels and lowered triglycerides were discovered in lab rats who were given apple cider vinegar alongside a high cholesterol diet. The rat who were not given ACV did not see the same drop in cholesterol.
7. Detox:
Apple cider vinegar can help detox your home, but it can also detox your body. It can help promote circulation and detoxify the liver. The acid in ACV can also bind to toxins which can assist in removing toxins from the body. Apple cider vinegar’s potassium content helps to break up mucus in the body and clearing the lymph nodes. This also aids in the removal of toxins. Add apple cider into your diet and check out these other ways to detox.
8.Clear Sinuses:
Since breaking up mucus is one of apple cider vinegar’s many talents, it also helps clear out the sinuses. Since it’s antibacterial, it can also prevent a sinus infection or cold as well. Sip some water and apple cider vinegar to breathe a little easier.
9. Sore Throat:
The bacteria fighting properties of apple cider vinegar work just about anywhere. Gargle equal parts warm water and apple cider vinegar at the first sign of a sore throat to keep it at bay and repeat every hour as needed.
10. Digestive Aid:
Having tummy troubles or know you’re going to eat something that you might regret later? Sip diluted apple cider vinegar (mixed in water or juice) to help settle that stomach. It’s the antibiotic properties and bacteria fighting power of ACV that help. Some say thepectin in apple cider vinegar also helps with intestinal spasms.
11. Itchy or Sunburned Skin:
I know this is one of my favorite uses for apple cider vinegar. Just apply right to the itchy area for some relief. It also works for itches caused by bug bites, poison ivy, or a jellyfish sting. As for sunburned skin, soak in a bath with 1 cup of apple cider vinegar to help ease the pain.
12.Wart Remover:
Over the counter wart removers are anything but natural. A trip to the doctor to remove it can be scary, painful, and leave a scar. Instead, soak a cotton ball in apple cider vinegar and cover the wart. Leave it covered overnight (I use a a bandaid or medical tape) and repeat every night until the wart falls right off.
13. Energy Boost:
Don’t reach for an chemical filled energy drink if you’re feeling tired. Instead, grab a bottle of apple cider vinegar for an energy boost. The potassium and and enzymes in apple cider vinegar help to give you a pick me up. Just add some ACV to a glass of water. I like adding it to my water during a workout to prevent fatigue. The amino acids in apple cider vinegar combat lactic acid build up that can happen after exercise.
BEAUTY/HYGIENE
14. Shiny, Flake Free Hair:
Apple cider vinegar is an excellent weekly hair rinse. It leaves hair looking shiny and soft. The acid in ACV helps to remove product build up. It also helps to balance your scalp’s pH level. Mix 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar into 4 cups water and rinse the hair after shampooing, then rinse with cold water. If you are having issues with dandruff, twice a week try spraying your scalp with equal parts apple cider vinegar and water. Place a towel around your head and leave wrapped for up to an hour. Wash your hair as you usually would.
15. Facial Toner/Cleanser:
Thanks to the antibacterial properties of apple cider vinegar, it’s great for cleaning most everything, even your face. It can even help prevent break outs. Just like with you scalp, it can help balance your skin’s pH levels. Dilute some apple cider vinegar with water and apply to a cotton ball to use as a toner or on blemishes.
16. Deodorant:
Many deodorants are harmful to your health. Apple cider vinegar will help fight the odor causing bacteria without the cancer causing toxins. Just apply a little ACV under your arms. You won’t be left smelling like vinegar once it dries.
17. Fade Bruises:
Coming from a long line of klutzes, this was a use of apple cider vinegar I was happy about. After a bump or the appearance of a bruise dab on some apple cider vinegar. It acts as an anti-inflammatory agent and will help to ease the discoloration.
18. Whiten Teeth:
Make those teeth sparkle after swishing around some apple cider vinegar diluted with two parts water. Then brush as usual. The bacteria fighting power of ACV is an added bonus too.
19. Eliminate Bad Breath:
Use apple cider vinegar as a mouth wash and gargle to help eliminate objectionable mouth odor. It kills the bacteria that causes bad breath.
20. Stop Smelly Feet:
In case you haven’t figured it out yet, apple cider vinegar helps get rid of bad smells, wherever they may be. If that just so happens to be on your feet, try this remedy. Wipe your feet down with a paper towel soaked in ACV to control odor. The ability of apple cider vinegar to balance the pH of your feet and eliminate odor causing bacteria is what makes it a great natural remedy.
21. Juice:
Consuming organic raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar can assist in many of the health benefits I listed above. Try adding it to juices or smoothies if the taste is too pungent for you on it’s own.
22. Baking:
Fluff up your baked good by adding apple cider vinegar. It adds lift to cookies, cakes, and other concoctions and you won’t taste it in the final product.
23. Sauces:
I use apple cider vinegar for my barbecue sauce and it’s perfect for that tangy but sweet flavor. Try it in your favorite marinades or mix it into condiments that are too thick.
24. Soups:
Still need more ways to get apple cider vinegar into your diet? Try adding it to soups. It can add a bit of brightness and flavor. Don’t worry, it won’t end up tasting like vinegar.
25. Salads:
I think this one goes without saying, but it certainly needed to make the list. I almost never buy salad dressings. Whisk together some apple cider vinegar and olive oil and your favorite additions (garlic, mustard, citrus, honey, etc) for a delicious drizzle over your organic greens. It’s even great in salad recipes especially!

9 Foods That Can Sabotage Your Diet

If you have a cheat meal or eat unhealthily every so often, that isn’t so bad (we try and follow the rule of eating an 80% clean diet). But, what if you’re eating badly and don’t know it? Sure, you stay away from deep-fried Oreos, but is your favorite “health food” snack keeping you from reaching your goals?
Here are nine foods that have successfully disguised themselves as “diet-friendly” foods. Don’t let them fool you.
Granola
Shocked? Granola is often touted as an outdoorsy health snack. Yet, it’s super high in calories and many variations are loaded with sugar and saturated fat.
Solution: Go raw. Muesli is basically just raw granola and it tends to have less sugars and oils—but just in case, always read the label. If you are trying to lose weight, make sure to measure to keep your portion size reasonable.

Frozen Diet Meals
Frozen dinners are not as healthy as they advertise. Though many are low in calories (most range from around 240–400 calories), they are highly processed, lacking in nutrients, and brimming with sodium. Although they may seem convenient, you give up a lot in exchange for the convenience of a three-minute microwaved meal.
Solution: Prepare healthy meals in bulk at the beginning of the week to deter you from having to choose these unhealthy convenient options. Or, if you absolutely must, read the labels. Some brands are better than others. Amy’s Kitchen, for example, does a better job than most.

Sports Drinks
Note the word “sports” in the title. These drinks are specifically designed to replenish carbs, electrolytes and other nutrients during long, hard efforts. In any other situation, they’re just sugar water. You might as well drink soda.
Solution: Generally, sports drinks are only useful for hard exercise going longer than an hour. Otherwise, you’re probably better off with water. However, if you’re eating at a calorie deficit and you’re having a hard time making it through your 30–60 minute workout, a little extra blood sugar might help, so experiment with a diluted sports drink. And again, read labels. High fructose corn syrup or artificial dyes won’t give you the fitness boost you’re looking for.

“Fat Free” Products
“Fat Free” might look good on paper, but your body actually needs fat! Plus, as Nutrition Expert Denis Faye explains, in most of these products “they just replace the fat with carbs and salt, so you’ve basically gone from pouring a little unsaturated fat on your salad to dumping on a pile of sugar.”
Solution: Stick with simple homemade dressings, like balsamic vinaigrette, and, if you’re out, ask for them on the side to control how much you’re using.

Muffins
American-style muffins first came into popularity at the end of the 18th century…and never went out of fashion again. But, this sweet quickbread is hardly healthy. Take those tempting blueberry muffins you see at some classic coffee chains. They’ll pack on about 460 calories and 15 grams of fat. Not to mention they’re usually made with refined flour, tons of sugar, and goodness knows what preservatives.
Solution: Almost all store-bought muffins should really just be avoided. If you’re really craving a muffin, try this flourless chocolate muffin that’s lower in calories and higher in fiber and other good-for-you components. Or, this plum bran muffin if you’re looking for a real fruit and fiber boost.

Sushi
As far as proteins go, fish deserves a high place in your diet and sushi can be a great way to enjoy it. However, most sushi is more rice than fish, and sometimes, it’s been deep fried (we’re looking at you, spider roll) or coated with mayonnaise (cue the dynamite roll and almost any sushi that has “spicy” in the name). While it’s never a complete junk food, like many items here, you can’t chow down without restraint and expect to see nothing but benefits.
Solution: If you do rolls, try to choose rolls made with brown rice or those that are low-carb (in other words, rice free). Or, stick with sashimi.

Pretzels
Don’t confuse these travel-friendly little bites that are low in fat, for a “healthy” snack. This carb-heavy, calorie-laden treat is almost completely devoid of nutrients and is often high in sodium. For instance, you’ll get an entire day’s worth of sodium in one cup of Rold Gold pretzels.
Solution: Stick to nutrient-dense snacks like almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, or sunflower seeds. Just keep an eye on the serving size if you’re watching your weight.

Veggie Chips
Just because something contains the word “veggie” in the name doesn’t mean it’s healthy. High in fat and sodium, Veggie Chips are often extraordinarily high in fat and sodium and, honestly, not much better for you than potato chips.
Solution: When snacking, eat your veggies raw—and dip them in hummus if you want to add flavor.

Tea
What’s the problem with tea today? It’s mainly not tea! Most mass-produced teas come bottled with preservatives and designer drinks like chai lattes pump the sugar and additive content through the roof.
Solution: Try Tejava (which is all-natural and just contains brewed tea), stick to unsweetened teas from your local coffee shop, or brew your own. It’s easy!

How I Overcame Hashimotos and Hypothyroidism!
This blog post was prompted by a motivating group of ladies that are going through the same struggles I went through for over 15 years! I was diagnosed with thyroid issues about 15 years ago. It started off as hypothyroidism and it wasn't until a little over 2 years ago that I finally found an endocrinologist that really listened to me and took his time. He diagnosed me with Hashimoto's, which is what I suspected all along.
I struggled with infertility for years before finally conceiving my daughter after 2 years of treatments. I had VERY irregular periods before her and, after having her, I went almost 8 years without a cycle at all. I battled depression, PPD, anxiety, weight gain, fatigue, etc. The ONLY time I was happy and my body felt normal was while I was pregnant, ironically enough! I tried everything under the sun. I then became pregnant again out of nowhere (since I didn't get periods) in April 2013 and that changed everything for me.
I didn't want to go through the depression, weight gain, PPD and overall crappy feeling I went through with my daughter again so I started researching EVERYTHING. I tried levothyroxine for years and it gave me severe headaches. I then switched to Synthroid and seemed to be ok but then my T3 went wacko after my first pregnancy so my doctor added Cytomel to the mix. When he realized I was breastfeeding, he took me off of it because he said it wasn't "safe". Well, if it wasn't safe for breastfeeding, I didn't want to take it at all, breastfeeding or not! That's when I found Armour Thyroid. It's a natural vs synthetic thyroid stimulant derived from pig thyroid. It helps balance both TSH and T3 so it was a good solution for me to avoid anything synthetic AND avoid having to take Cytomel. That helped balance my levels but my milk production was still low due to my underactive thyroid. I was still tired but not as tired. I was also still gaining weight. I gained weight while breastfeeding both babies because I was SO hungry. I didn't overeat but because of my hypo, eating even normal amounts brought on the weight.
That's when I was introduced to Shakeology. I was VERY skeptical. VERY is putting it mildly. Number 1, it's NOT cheap. In fact, it's expensive and considering I had JUST left my full time job as a deputy to only work a few hours a month, it was not likely to be a possibility. BUT I spoke to my husband and we both agreed that, if it helps, it's worth it. AND it's the cleanest shake out there so I wanted to give it a shot. My kids loved drinking smoothies and our protein shakes and I figured this was a healthy way for us to be able to share with them. So, I gave myself 1 month. If I saw no changes, I'd pack it back up (even if it's empty, that's their return policy) and get my money back.
I am not kidding when, after about 3 weeks of having my Shakeology every single day, I had to try and remember when my last day of feeling super tired by 3pm or my last day of feeling totally depressed, not wanting to get out of bed was. I had energy WIITHOUT drinking coffee (since I had cut that out because I REALLY wanted to see if Shakeology would give me the non-caffeinated energy it promised). I was full and not craving crap like chocolate, cookies, cake, eat all day long anymore. It was honestly a HUGE turning point for me and it made me understand why SO many people are such believers of it!
What I believe is in Shakeology that truly helps those with thyroid issues and other endocrine disorders are the adaptogen herbs and proprietay blends that are all combined in one meal to give you the maximum number of nutrients in one sitting. And not in a multivitamin but in a meal or snack. It's a natural blend of ingredients which was HUGE for me.
Soon I started exercising again, something I always loved but, after Evan (my 2nd baby and my miracle), stopped because of the depression, lack of energy, weight gain and just feeling disgusted. I also couldn't go anywhere because he was so tiny. I started working out at home with some programs and decided to become a coach. I felt I had to share this and help as many as I could. Years ago, I was approached to become a coach and never even thought twice about it. I was sure it wasn't for me. I was a gym rat and like I said earlier, I wasn't going to spend a lot of money on a dumb "protein" shake. Little did I know! Now I wish I'd tried it sooner!
I started using the 21 Day Fix program to learn how to eat balanced meals and watch my portions. I also loved the workouts it came with because I was able to workout at home with my baby either awake or while he napped. I lost 9 lbs and over 22 inches in a few months (had to go slow since I was breastfeeding) and I haven't looked back since. I have grown in strength, mind and body since I started this journey. I have been mindful of how I feel when I eat well, and when I don't. When I have my Shakeology and when I don't, and when I exercise and when I don't. For me, exercise is my Prozac. I have to make it a priority whether I'm tired or not. And when it's only 30 minutes a day, it's totally doable. It's even more so when I can include my kiddos and they join me!
Fast forward to now, and I still feel amazing! I've been following my routine with Armour, Shakeology, balanced nutrition and regular workouts those since my son was 4 months old and I feel amazing FINALLY! I stopped breastfeeding him after 24 months (even though Drs said my supply wouldn't last more than 2 months) and 2 months later, I got my menstrual cycle again too after almost 8 years! I have energy, I still have to eat well and workout regularly to maintain my weight BUT my perspective on this has completely changed and it's 100% manageable!
You can achieve this too!! Feel free to reach out for any guidance! And if you'd like to give Shakeology a try, let me know and I can send you a link for a 7 day sampler with one of each flavor! kiss emotic

And if you'd like to give Shakeology a try, let me know and I can send you a link for a 7 day sampler with one of each flavor! kiss emotic
